'Feed as nature
intended.........'

Celia Gadd editor of Equine, Canine & Country Life talks to Lou Talintyre about the innovative new complete horse feed she has designed and is now producing.

"On walking around the stud it is obvious that all the horses are relaxed and happy, and are also in top class condition. To manage over sixty horses on the 100 + acre estate takes great organisation and top class stable management procedures. They try and keep the horses as naturally as possible, with many living out most of the time, and sticking to a fibre only diet.

I asked Lou about the management and feeding regime and she explained how the TMS GOLD feed brand was born and how it has now become commercially available.

Lou Talintyre with TMS Gold Horse Feed“I used to spend hours mixing up the feeds for all the horses as I wanted them to be fed as naturally as possible using the best ingredients I could find.  I used to add this to that and that to this and then mix it all up in  mini cement mixer - it took hours !

For years now I have combined high fibre and oil with un-molassed sugar beet and grass pellets. I have always been interested in nutrition and constantly been trying to find a feed that really ticked all the boxes as far as healthy natural equine nutrition goes. I was also trying to find a way of making it easy and time efficient to administer.

The breakthrough came three years ago when I met Robert Fowler, a renowned and respected feed and nutrition expert. Working closely together we finessed and balanced the feed. It made sense, after successful trials  to offer it to our livery customers as they had been constantly asking us about it. From there it has just blossomed and is being used around the country by many people in all different walks of equestrian life.

This really is a complete feed – it is fortified with optimum levels of vitamins and minerals and contains a high level of antioxidants. With less than 6% starch it is ideal to feed many different types and breeds of horse without creating behavioural problems. The beauty of the feed is that you don’t need to add anything else – it’s all there including pre and pro biotics - yea-sac and Profeed.

This feed is designed to be a slower release energy feed that the horses can work well on but without the need to burn off the initial ‘fizz’

The mixes have been designed to cover a spectrum of dietary requirements from the pregnant mare to the professional competition horse. Robert’s input in the balancing and micro-dietary requirements has been invaluable.  Three blends are now available.

TMS Gold – Easy Lite is for the resting horse, or one that is an extremely good doer with plenty of natural energy.

The Working Fibre mix is designed with the normal pleasure or medium competition horse in mind and then Stud Fibre is slightly higher in protein for lactating mares and youngstock or competition horses that are working at a higher level, i.e. racing, eventing or endurance.

TMS Gold Horse FeedLou explained that they are now looking for agents who can add to their income by promoting and selling the feeds around the country.

“We are looking for people who really care about horse’s nutritional needs, and are motivated more by horse welfare.  This feed programme should provide a lifestyle change for many horses. We have already found that our customers are delighted with the way their horses respond to the feed both in terms of general well-being and demeanour. The horses seem to thrive on it both mentally and physically”.

All in all, this friendly centre offers a wide range of services from dressage and Western lessons to Western Shows and educational lectures.  The foaling facilities are superb and as well as the feed being available there is also a mobile shop on site with a wide range of Western tack and accessories on offer."

On a personal note I have been using TMS GOLD for some time now and would agree with everything Lou has to say about the feed and the results.

Lesson Horse
of the Month

Western Riding Lessons at The Mendip StudAn interview with Jarvis from The Mendip stud
Name: Colonel Jarvis
Age: 11yrs
Colour: Sorrel
Size: 14.2hh

Why did you choose to live at TMS?
I was living in Wales with Lisa my rider. She wanted us to visit The Mendip Stud for some clinics which I thought would be great fun… then she decided to take a job there instead so my pal Roo and me we moved there with Lisa in April 2006.

What did you think of your new home?
As soon as we arrived I knew it was horse heaven straight away... well… hey, come on

what four legged equine wouldn't…? big lush green fields and paddocks, loads of mates to play with and best of all a really big sand pen that you can do really fast gallop circles in… yeee haaa

What disciplines do you specialize in Jarvis?
Lisa would tell you that I am a good all around but my very favourite is really fast reining. I am pretty good at trail and Lisa and me like to show off our bridle less display now and again. I DO NOT DOOOO PLEASURE… EVER.

Have you had any show achievements?
I went to my first party last year with a rider from Germany (Nina). We had great fun and had a go at everything. I nearly fell off me shoes when we won the shows high point…

What is your favourite food Jarvis?
I lurrve my food and wow anyone that gets tooo close when I'm eating… The Mendip Studs working fibre is defiantly my favourite. Although id do anything for jammi donut…

Do you have a favourite client?
I have taught loads of lovely clients many, many things. I wouldn't get any tea tonight if I didn't tell you it was Taliska Baden. I liked it very much when she used to come and ride me, so I used to behave really well for her. Lisa has now allowed me to live with Taliska and her family in Dorset for a while and although I really miss all my pals at The Mendip Stud I do get to see them all when I visit for the clinics and shows.

Diamond In Hollywood

1999 - 2007

It is with sadness that we report the passing of Diamond In Hollywood. For us Diamond was in a league of his own. His ground scraping mane, his fantastic physique and his awesome temperament made him one of those special horses not only to us but to many others.

Diamond In HollywoodDiamond went to Ilan Rosenberg's training barn some 2 years ago and was in the running to be selected for the World Equestrian Games in Aachen in 2006. Ilan had high hopes for him. Unfortunately a few months before the games Diamond's uveitis became so acute that he lost sight completely in his right eye and retained only single digit percentage vision in his left. According to his eye specialist he retained only enough sight to recognise the difference between light and dark.

After much soul searching we decided to leave him with Ilan to see if he could lead anything like a normal life. To our great  surprise and astonishment he handled his impaired vision incredibly well. Ilan had to adapt his training and riding style to accommodate Diamond's particular circumstances but it was evident that Diamond loved his work and was as good minded as he had ever been. His improvement continued so much so that Ilan showed him in Kreuth at the Bavarian Championships in September of 2006. He scored a very creditable 69½.

Diamond's progress and rehabilitation continued through 2006/7 and to Ilan's utter astonishment he began to plus his manoeuvres and became a horse capable of scoring 70+'s in open competition. As a result Diamond was selected to represent Israel at the European Affiliate Championships in 2007.

Sadly the Israeli team was unable to attend and Diamond missed his chance to gain full international honours. However he was not to miss out on his moment and in the Bavarian Championships of 2007 he spun and slid his way to victory and a bronze trophy in the 'Limited Open' scoring a 72½. All this in a large class against good competition and less than 5% vision! Quite an achievement for him and Ilad Kalifa, Ilan's assistant, who rode him on this occasion.

Diamond In Hollywood

Further complications arose in autumn this year and following advice from leading specialists and whilst undergoing surgery he was humanely euthanised.

He was a great horse with awesome looks, a second to none temperament but above all a heart of courage. He is greatly missed.

Diamond produced three babies and we are fortunate that his legacy and that of his fathers - the great Hollwood Dunit -  live on through them - we own one with Ilan Rosenberg which  will go to Germany to train in her father footsteps in January of 2008, another is owned by Chris Neeld-Leslie and will go to Bob Mayhew for training and Bo remains here for sale waiting for the right home.

Tsunami Appeal Update

In early 2005 we held a western riding showcase in aid of the Tsunami Earthquake Appeal following the disaster that took place on December 26th 2004. Thousands of people lost their lives and millions saw their livelihoods and homes wiped out. We managed to raise  £5099.77 with the event.

Within a week of the Tsunami unprecedented public and corporate generosity helped the DEC raise £60 million, by the end of February 2005 donations had reached £300 million.

As well as providing initial emergency aid, temporary housing, clean water, food supplies and medical services, the funds raised were so high that DEC Trustees put in a place a three year spending plan. The money raised has rebuilt villages, schools and hospitals and reinstated fishing ports and small factories.
