Ilan
Rosenberg wins 2006 Reining Futurity of the DQHA
(German/Deutsche Quarter Horse Association)
| Many
congratulations to Ilan on winning the DQHA Reining Futurity his second
time. Ilan riding Freddie Benko’s Karat Valentine. The four year old Red
Dun Stallion had a beautiful run, with great speed and superb manoeuvres
and came home in 1st place against 26 other at the Q6, the
European Championships of the DQHA in Aachen last week and became with
this performance the 2006 Reining Futurity Champions.
The result was very special to the Rosenberg family as the
horse was bred and raised by Ilan and Niki and Ilan has been responsible
for the starting and training of the horse all of his life and to take him
to a major win in the very tough European circuit is a huge achievement
and ambition fulfilling moment for Ilan. The Stud horse was sired by
Fourteen Karat Jac, by Chrome Plated Jac. His dam was a full sister to
Surprise Enterprise, who unfortunately died last August, shortly followed
by her full brother and her father, brining and end to this great lineage.

New
Clinic Programme
Shows for 2007 and Our Western Week
It's very hard to believe that
the 30 days of clinics we put up on the website towards the end of of last month
are nearly all full and only a few remaining spaces left. It's left a dilemma as
to what to do next and how to accommodate the demand for clinics with
established and desired trainers. We are currently trying to put dates together
to enhance and
expand the teaching and clinic programme.
We are announcing a
two day clinic with Sylvia Jäckle today and are in the process of arranging
dates with other International trainers.
We are planning on a t least
two shows here next year and a five day western week ………..with clinics,
workshops, BBQ's , fun evenings, bar of course and Lou's great food. etc……..more
details will be available in the next newsletter.

'Over
the hill'
Recollections
of a summer's work experience at The Mendip Stud by Nina Scholmann
| When I told my friends
that I was going to spend another one of my semester holidays working with
horses they could not believe it. "What the hell makes you choose
shovelling shit, getting up at stupid o'clock in the morning and getting
your hands dirty over partying four times a week, sleeping long, hanging
out at the beach and simply do nothing???" Answer - it opens up so
many possibilities for me and this summer it meant I could go and live in
England for 2 whole months. When John and Lou agreed to having me live
with them and work for them I could not believe it. I was scared and
excited at the same time: What if they did not like me? What if I was not
what they expected? What if…? A thousand questions and doubts were
occupying my head on the day I was supposed to enter the plane and fly to
England and I nearly chickened out of it (Thank god I did not do it!!). |
|
One week later I was trying to
persuade my boyfriend to move to England with me. I loved it!!
Everything I did or saw was
just fantastic: the amount of tea we drank everyday (just like they tell you in
the schoolbooks), the work with those wonderful horses (T.C., Bentley and of
course my Baby J - I hope they have all learned to swim so that I can pick them
up in Calais) and above all the people I met. Everybody was really nice and very
open and within days I felt like I had worked at the Mendip Stud forever.
When Lisa offered me to ride
Jarvis I was absolutely "over the hill" (my very own expression for
so, so, so happy) and when I thought it could not get any better I found myself
competing in Badgworth -one of my absolute highlights - taking part in every
clinic that was going on and riding even more horses.
There are so many things I
have learned during my stay at the Mendip Stud. Especially the work with the
foals and broodmares was so interesting as I have never worked on a stud before.
There is always something going on and to participate in the clinics of the
various trainers was fantastic.
This has been the best summer
ever and I cannot wait to come and visit. Thank you, John and Lou, for making me
feel so welcome and for giving me this opportunity. I was so lucky and I have
made wonderful friends. There is no other way to say it: It was 'beep beeping'*
awesome!
Nina
Everyone who met Nina was
impressed by her wonderful attitude and joie de vie - everyone who comes here
regularly will miss her - everyone wishes you well and hopes you'll come back
before you are ' over the hill' - ed J

Congratulations to Lisa!
| Many
congratulations to Lisa on gaining her WES instructors certificate - Lisa
has been involved in the industry for the last eight years, four of which
were spent working as an apprentice to Susannah Anderson in East Sussex.
Lisa has already established herself as the life and soul of the party and
when her natural charisma, considerable horsemanship and instruction
skills combine make for some interesting and wonderful lessons. If you'd
like to join in with some of Lisa's trail classes or horsemanship classes
or just have a go at western riding give here a call on 01934 751258 or
fill in an information request/form on the website.
PS - in Lisa's case a
supply chocolate biscuits do endear you to the teacher ! JJ |

Lessons on Western trained
Quarter Horses now available - riding school licence and registration gained.
Unless they are western
trained horses it is difficult to give first time riders and clients a really
good insight into our sport especially within the confines of a hour or so's
lesson - to that end we have spent a long time sourcing horses capable of
fulfilling that need and at the same time have been working towards obtaining
our riding school licence and registration. We are pleased to announce that was
obtained a few months ago. We can now offer lessons on quarter horses in the
knowledge we have climbed the hurdles and satisfied all the requirements of the
red tape brigade.
Anyone interested in lessons
should contact Lisa by e-mail on lisa@themendipstud.com
or by phone on 01934 751258

What
British Breeding Does
For Studs & Breeders
| Instigator
of the Breeder's Quality Mark (BQM), the British Equestrian Federation's (BEF)
British Breeding seeks not only to improve the standard of studs and stud
management in Britain, but also to facilitate the continued improvement in
the standard of the British bred horse and pony.
Without doubt the two go
hand in hand and in examining and setting straight internal processes,
procedures and policies under the guidance of the BEF, studs awarded the
BQM can achieve a higher standard both in terms of management and in terms
of breeding. |

|
Information is the key to
improvement. If establishments can obtain access to information easily, it will
help to inform the decisions they make. If it is easy to find which stallions
consistently produce good progeny (carefully bred with a distinct purpose in
mind) in combination with which mares, then the overall standard of horses and
ponies bred in the UK will improve. This is what the National Equine Database
(NED) is all about. Due for launch in the early part of 2007, this web based
data management system will enable users to view equine records and run detailed
reports on their breeding and their performance in combination with that of
their progeny and kin, helping to build up a scientific picture of what crosses
are more likely to achieve long term competitive success. Countries on the
continent have had the benefit of similar systems for years, enabling them to
establish a greater market share in certain sectors. British breeders, having
access to this information from next year, will hopefully be able to make use of
its accessibility to continue to improve the standard of their stock and
eventually the financial rewards which at present are often hard to come by.
British Breeding seeks to
support British breeders by making information available through its own
programmes and initiatives and its active support of NED. For full details
please visit www.bef.co.uk
and look in the British Breeding section or contact Jan Rogers direct.

David
Dellin & Ilan Rosenberg DVD's
Did we miss anyone?
Hopefully by now all of you who ordered your DVD
from the clinic you attended have received it. However if you didn't order one
at the time but would now like to get a copy then please let us know.
We had intended to produce a DVD that was unique to
each person but the constraints of our hardware and software combined with
filming 10 people who at times were all moving together meant that proved
impossible. We will be working on improving our capabilities in the future but
I'm sure the complete footage you received served as a useful reminder of the
day and the fabulous instruction offered by these outstanding clinicians.
