Oh What A Wonder-foal Day!

It's baby time again and the 2007 season started with a bang! 6 mares on deck, all fat and ready to foal at any minute. Our first to foal was one of 3 Connamaras owned by Lesley Payne. Bridie produced a big Dun Colt Foal.

2007 Foals

Second to go was one of our own mares, Mos Likeable (you can read an interview with her sister further on!). She was in foal to Studley and gave us a huge filly foal. A true clone of her daddy in every way. Carrying the trademark 'Studley Blaze', there was no mistaking who she belonged to. We soon named her 'Lovely'.

After more Connemaras and more Studley babies we cleared the decks for the next round.

Dolly - Riker foal

Our Riker baby is a sight to behold. Dolly is a chestnut roan blanket. We are all convinced she has been here before. Calm, unflappable and confident in her manner, she is a fine example of what a top class appaloosa should be.

On deck now are more mares in foal to Zip Chip Leaguer. One of which is a paint. We are all looking forward to seeing what we get!

Foals for Sale

Our Beuno Chexnic mare Doc's Wizzin Chic delivered a beautiful Palomino colt sired by German Derby winner Doctor Stream. The foal is called Eden and has already been purchased and will be on his way back to Germany at weaning.

In America we are proud to boast yet another Smart Spook foal from our classy money winning mare Jessie's Wright On.

Should anyone require colostrum or powdered milk for use in emergencies, we are always on the end of the phone if help is needed in our area. We are registered as a stockholder of these products for the National Foaling Bank.

Keep an eye on the website as new pictures are posted as soon as we get them.

Bye for now,

Lou

A Bit About Me
New WES Chairman
David Brindley

David BrindleyMy involvement with Western started many years ago when I joined Tab Ryders Rodeo a touring show team who entertained the crowds at County Shows and other outdoor events. My interest in Western took a serious turn when I met Jim Chapman and Evelyn Dash some 20 years ago whilst they were doing a demonstration at the Royal Norfolk Showground and it was Jim who persuaded me to buy a horse to train myself.

Two years later I bought Joiners Southern Comfort the now infamous Section D Welsh Cob who entertains the spectators and fellow competitors alike at the events we attend throughout the UK.

My involvement with WES started in 1992 and I became Area Rep for North Wales and North Midlands around 1995. Since then I've organised too numerous events to mention and was responsible for starting both WES News and WES ENews, organising the first Northern two day show and the Show Managers Seminar.

My vision for WES? To promote it's growth and the growth in Western in a more commercial way over the next couple of years but maintaining the friendly relaxed atmosphere it has for its members and competitors.

There is still a great potential for Western within the UK and WES is very much in tune with the grass roots. These are the people we have got to attract to the sport in order for it to grow. We also need to work more closely with other organisations involved in Western as it is only by working together are we going to achieve anything like the potential we have as a discipline.

My ultimate vision would be for us to be in a situation where Western Classes were an option at every major horse show within the UK until then we just keep trying.

Next months 'a bit about me'
will be by Johanna Vardon M.B.E.

This is a story that anyone involved in breeding or young stock should read.
Sadly it can happen to any of us at any time.
Cooper's Story
by Christine Richards

A couple of weeks ago now, I was in happy ignorance that some things would never happen to me. Be warned!

Maybe I knew that Mendip Stud had a long standing continuing 'interest' in the National Foaling Bank and it's work, but I always quickly pressed on the 'For Sale' or 'Foals' Button without any further thought. Just as
you do when browsing through fellow quarter horse owners websites, more likely I didn't if I am honest. Hands up those who are guilty here!

Hence the email.

I sadly lost a very precious much loved mare in foaling, a more dramatic, gory, mind numbing, desperate event I do not want to experience again, fortunately the foal was alive - for that moment.

A friend contacted the NFB (Johanna Vardon) and the very welled oiled cogs that Johanna had oiled for so many years started to turn.

A very long story, but the ending was superb,

after a lot of hard work and valuable friends helping and only, and I mean, only with the help of Johanna we succeeded to find a suitable mare and carry out the long
process of successful fostering.

She was available all through the day and night, without so much as a "Oh. it's you again!" or "Why didn't you listen better the first (and possibly second) time I told you?", she bolstered all of us involved through a very difficult, supersonic learning curve to make sure the fostering went as smoothly as possibly for the maiden mare and orphaned
foal.

I have had so much response from people I do not know and everyone has been so kind and interested in how little Cooper and his new mum Pasadena are doing.

I would publicly like to thank everybody who went through this ordeal with me, physically and mentally, all the support everyone gave me - it was the spur to keep us going.

Most of all naturally, I would like to Johanna Vardon of National Foaling Bank.

Please could I ask people to consider helping the NFB in whatever form they feel fit e.g. donation, sponsoring Mendip Stud in their cause.

Not just you breeders, everybody, when you are riding your beloved horse, looking at him/her grazing contentedly out in the field, contemplating buying that new horse which will take you to the top and those elusive
blue ribbons - maybe - just maybe the National Foaling Bank has helped that happen along the way somewhere or will do so in the future.

Only your involvement in this will help Johanna continue this invaluable work and keep those cogs well oiled for the future generation of all horses, let alone our precious Quarter Horses.

I for one, am a total convert

It really is a matter of life or death.

Christine

Cooper and foster mare
PS. Cooper is a complete star, along with his new mum Pasadena - appeared on the front of the local newspaper and some journals/magazines may be doing his story sometime soon.

West Coast Circuit and The Mendip Stud are proud to present the Vardon Trophy

We are proud to have had the National Foaling Bank as our charity of choice for a number of years now. Johanna Vardon is one of life's true treasures - opinionated, forthright and passionate about her work, and the World's leading authority on mare and foal adoptions. Having read Christine's story of Cooper we have decided to take a very pro-active approach to raise money for this wonderful charity. We will be dedicating 3 classes at both of the West Coast Circuit shows (6 in total) this year to the National Foaling Bank and are inviting all breeders, mare owners and every equine enthusiast to consider becoming involved by either joining the National Foaling Bank directly or by helping in becoming one of the sponsors of these classes. All entry fees for these classes will be directed to the charity. These classes are Amateur Trail, Amateur Horsemanship and Amateur Pleasure. Points will be awarded up to 6th place and the amateur rider with the highest score over both shows will be presented with the Vardon Trophy presented by Johanna herself at the end of the Summer Show.

Easter Youth Clinics
by Lisa John

At 30 years old and having made the decision not to have children of my own still firmly in place, I surprised myself when I decided to hold a youth day in the Easter holidays. With only a brief mention of the forthcoming event in the monthly newsletter, you can imagine my shock when I had over 22 children begging for a place. One youth day quickly turned into a youth week - with me on the scrounge for more small saddles and as many helpers as we could muster.

Mendip Stud youth clinic

Sussannah Anderson and Jan Smart came to my aid with smaller western saddles. Thank you so much both of you. Alison Hill, a former school teacher and regular at the stud, offered to help with crowd control!

With the first day rapidly approaching I was as ready as I could be for 22 kids, their entourage of parents, nannies and guardians. What had I done?!

The April 3rd day of reckoning was upon us and at 9.30 the first troops had arrived together with Lilly Fry who had popped in to help and demo on her Pleasure horse Angel. After tea and lots of biscuits supplied by Ellie Beynon during which we had our safety discussions, the merry band of Saffie, Ellie, Melissa, Tymara, Ella and Lucy got the horses all ready for their morning of showmanship. All my concerns and doubts about the younger community were dispelled from that first morning.

The next day brought Sue Woods and her team of four. Marley, Jessica, Vicky & Kyle were good fun and really knowledgeable and easy to work with. They rode all the horses very well and at the same time the horses went really well for them too. So far so good 10 down 12 to go!

The Thursday was as positive and pro-active as the first couple of days. Tom, Ella, Bella (from Ireland), Katherine & Toby took the day and their riding very seriously. We started late because the plaiting bands, baby oil, hoof black and scissors were out. With hindsight I am now convinced that the parents were as, if not more, enthusiastic than their offspring. The atmosphere was electric as the kids pushed for harder and more complicated patterns.

At the end of that day Nina, our German friend and instructor, gave a great reining display with 6 kids and 12 mums & dads sitting on the fence whooping n hollering for more turnarounds and longer stops.

Lisa John - youth clinic

A few days later, last but not least, Rachel, Sophie, Lizzie, Eleanor, Jasmine and Olivia arrived. Once again all of them worked hard, listened and attempted to put into practice everything they were being taught. We had another fantastic day and although I was relieved that my youth week had been a great success, I was saddened that it was all over.

I would like to say a massive thank you to Nina, Alison and Ellie for helping with crowd and horse control, Lou for yet again putting the 'F' word back into cooking. That's 'F'abulous before anyone thinks differently! More importantly thank you to all the riders who were all without exception, kind and respectful of our horses, good fun to be with, polite and well behaved. Last but not least to all the parents thank you for all your support and as promised more youth day dates will be posted shortly on the website in time for the summer holidays.

See you all soon,

Lisa xx

Lesson Horse of the Month

An interview with 'Mo' fromMike on Mo The Mendip Stud

Name: Mos Friendly
Age: 9yrs
Colour: Sorrel
Size: 14.3hh

How did you come to live at the Mendip stud Mo?
I was born in Texas and moved around a bit while I was a filly, Oklahoma and then Ohio. I had my first baby in Maineville. I then decided to visit some mare friends in the UK and lived in Nottingham for a while before meeting and moving in with my second stud (Zip Chip Leaguer aka Studley).

How long did that relationship last?
Well I fell pregnant in my first spring but Studley had to move to Germany with work commitments before our baby filly Davina was born. So unfortunately he never got to see her but she still lives at the Mendip stud….and if Studley ever returns I will tell him how proud of her I am…

How did you become a lesson horse?Mos Friendly
When my husband left me I decided to return to work and concentrate on my career for a while. Just at that time a position became available on the riding school team with Lisa, I jumped at the chance. After bringing up two kids I thought that working again would do me a lot of good. I have to say that I am thoroughly enjoying it.

What is your favourite western discipline?
I would have to say it's the pleasure… I luuuuurrrrrvvvvvv jogging although, I have turned my hoof to reining recently. Lisa and I are a pretty good team when Ilan Rosenberg visits. We have improved our turn around and even popped a lead change or two. I am the first one to admit I'm terrible at trail. I make up for it in sooo many other ways.

What do you hope for the future?
I took one of my regular clients (Douglas Hill) off to a small local show last week and we did really well ( 3rd place in the horsemanship). I'm hoping that I will get the chance to do more competing as the season gets underway. There are some big shows heading this way for 2007 so I am crossing my hooves that I'll be ready to give it my best jog.

An Elegant Glow 1992-2007

An Elegant Glow

Very sadly in March our superb pleasure mare An Elegant Glow was struck and killed by lightning whilst grazing in a field in Gainesville, Texas.

To compound the loss she was 10 months in foal to Blazing Hot. Glow has been one of those exceptional brood mares, in fact the best pleasure mare that we have had the good fortune to own. She produced great progeny and this year one of her sons Hot

Nuff To Glow will be ridden by 3-time World Champion David Dellin at the Reichart Celebration on August 17th in Tulsa.

Last year she delivered another stunning colt, again from Joan and Robbie Schroeder's Blazing Hot. This colt which David calls Jonny Jnr now resides in his barn. On hearing of Glow's sad demise David said "She may well have saved her best for last."

A personal retrospective - the pre season training tour of Germany - the non ridden version

By Penny Brommesma

The Saga's on tour in Germany

The tour was set and we were to visit Ilan and Niki Rosenburg over in Elsenz. Even with the aid of a map I was not able to narrow down our destination to anything more precise than Germany. Luckily my trusty navigator Sally was at hand to guide me while my mind was left to higher matters like the wonderful job she had done cleaning my fridge. Gill Parker was joining us for the adventure and was able trump my glee as she had just bought a new fridge! So off we set across Europe marvelling at the wonders of our respective mobile kitchenettes.

By nightfall we were in Luxembourg - weather report: bloody freezin'! Luckily there was a nice restaurant in walking distance so we were able to take our minds off the wind and ice. While we had been in the warm our lorries had definitely been feeling the chill! Gill's wonderful new fridge had fused all her lights and every water wielding appliance in mine had either burst, split or frozen solid. I spent all night fully clothed wishing I was either warmer, younger or drunker!

By the time we arrived on Friday Sal and I were so excited that Ilan's best friend was keen to get a shot of whatever we were on and made it clear that he was prepared to pay good money! David Brimson arrived later and appeared to have picked up some 'eau de burnt clutch' in the duty free. Just teasing David, it was great of you to ferry us around the whole time!

Peter, Gill, David and I trained all of Saturday but then flew back to the UK in the evening to

celebrate Julia Stevens becoming Julia Atkins! In Frankfurt airport Peter was starting to get a little uneasy about the somewhat laid back approach that Sal and I were taking to all those 'plastic bag this, 100ml that' rules they have around customs. As we drew closer to the officials it dawned on us that we were the only ones who thought that international-party-going-jet-setters, like ourselves, were an exception.

Ten items per person was clearly not enough - unless you were Peter, of course, who did not appear to have any…

The customs officer peered down at the clear bag full of creams, mascara and lipsticks, "These yours sir?" Peter confirmed they were with a pout and a flutter of eye-lashes before mincing swiftly on.

We were back by Sunday and spent the evening in the bar catching up on the gossip before heading to bed to get ready for our day of training on Monday. Tuesday night we were given a little treat

The treat in question, John Calder told us, was a wine tasting event. On arrival we were met by a charming old gentleman who was proud to inform us that a famous author, a friend of his, was going to be giving us a talk that evening. Half way through the talk our translator Nikki had to visit the lady's room so Sally volunteered to take over. Very soon the topic of the lecture appeared to change from life, philosophy and pressing world issues, to sex, ping pong and the moral dilemmas posed by lady boys. The audience began to liven up as matters closer to home were being discussed and the learned author had the wisdom to wonder off silently taking his high brow insights with him. Patricia Greaves was polite enough to take the time outside to listen to him talk at length about many of the things on his mind. Unfortunately she had never taken the time to learn German - convincing nods, smiles and enthusiastic murmurs seemed to be enough to fool both him and Sally.

Back at the wine tasting Peter was appreciating each new glass with increasing enthusiasm. Holding the desert wine to his nose he listened to the description of its signature bouquet, took a sniff and loudly voiced his agreement. Holding it to the light he nodded and murmured while closely inspecting the subtle colouring. Finally tasting it and he gave his full approval before turning to hear the opinions of his fellow wine tasters who politely informed him, "Peter… that's your water you idiot."

Thursday we all set off for Kreuth. It was fantastic, everybody should go! The Brits turned up to support us which was really nice. Nikki and Ilan ran around making sure we were on time for our classes and the horses were warmed up. They always had a kind word and a smile for us which really helped keep spirits up.

I would like to end with some winning tips from Lita Pocock - it's all about presentation. Shortly after lending me her chaps Lita disappeared, presumably to prime her secret weapon. When she arrived at the gate onlookers were impressed by her dramatic appearance all in black and all eyes followed her as she began her pattern. The ride was good but the cherry was still to come as she began her spin and wowed both the audience and judges alike. Turn by turn, button by button horse and rider worked in unison to win some well deserved points. Next time I think I will have to borrow her shirt as well as her chaps!

I hope John organises another trip soon, the only good thing about getting older is that finally you can afford to go on these adventures. Thanks John it was great and so were you.
