We are looking forward to seeing many spectators at this year David Dellin clinics.

A three times AQHA World Champion at the age of 28 David has established himself as one of the most sought after and admired western clinicians in the world today. Gill Parker, multiple European Champion, one of the riders attending last years clinics and who has been riding Western now for 20 years was enthralled by David's teaching and said that he was 'without doubt the best clinician she had ever worked with!'

It goes without saying that you'll get a huge amount out of Dave Dellin clinics by just sitting or standing on the rail. Don't miss out on this once yearly event. To read more about Dave Dellin click here

This years venue will be at the wonderful equestrian centre at Stretcholt a few miles

down the road from us in Somerset. Please download a map and route guidance. For those of you with GPS systems the post code is TA6 4SR

Last weekend Tally came to the Ilan Rosenberg Clinic here at the Mendip Stud. Tally showed us the first draft of the E-Zine for British Reining she has called 'Rundown'. What Tally has produced is outstanding and I'm sure the bi-monthly production will be a firm favourite for all interested in the sport in the UK and beyond.

I thought it might be a good idea for us all to know a little more about the editor of the new E-Zine so I asked Tally to do a little introduction on herself…….the title 'A bit about me' was mine - but it has spawned an idea for us to do an article on people in the industry once a month under the heading of 'A bit about me', next months
article will be on South African International rider and trainer Shane Borland.

A Bit About Me

Tally WadeRunDown editor, Tally Wade, hopes to bring a fresh approach to media in the Western Riding community. A business management graduate, she has diverse interests ranging from her prerequisite equine involvement to motion picture production, mentoring and sustainable development. She is currently assistant editor for a national sustainable building magazine and is in the process of launching an independent 'green' journal addressing lifestyle choices.

In 2001/2002 she worked in Brazil for Iracambi, a rainforest conservation / sustainable farming organisation, and continues to represent its work in the UK as

a trustee and editor of its quarterly  newsletter. In the world of equestrianism, Tally has been a bored English rider since a serious accident dissuaded her from taking part in the more 'exciting' side of competition. A part time job at Sterling Quarter Horses rekindled her enthusiasm and she is now a strong advocate of the Western way and has been lucky enough to find a wonderful, if somewhat complicated, Quarter Horse companion.

Having formed a close relationship with the team at the Mendip Stud, Tally has attended two Ilan Rosenberg clinics and has nothing but respect for this wonderful man who has boosted her confidence in herself and her horse. It is through contacts in publishing made at the latest clinic, and extensive pep talks with mentors, that a new project is in its embryonic stages aiming at producing a magazine uniting western disciplines in one publication and under one banner. Tally intends to provide the means to raise the profile of non-classical horsemanship, ensuring a full and fair representation to the widest possible audience. Watch this space.

Results and Diary Service

Jo Corringham is starting to pull together all the show information and preparing the diary. Jo will be contacting everyone in the next couple of days. Would anyone wanting their show included in the diary section please contact Jo on jocorringham@yahoo.co.uk

A report on the recent
Ilan Rosenberg Clinic

by Tally Wade

Ilan Rosenberg

The best thing about Mendip Stud apart from its facilities, professional service and warm welcome is the quality of its visiting clinicians. Tally Wade recalls her experience as an attendee of the spring clinic with champion reining producer Ilan Rosenberg.

From his base in Elsenz in Germany, Ilan runs a barn of 27 Open and Non-Pro reiners with his wife Niki and young daughter. From only a few trips to the UK as a clinician he has attracted a loyal following and now has eight British horses with him in training. Ilan's methods are uncomplicated and his results a testament to his coherent training program developed from years of understanding, acknowledging the horse as an athlete and an individual. He works with both horse and rider on their own level installing confidence and respect as each combination is taken through the principals of pressure/release and the importance of consistency.

Reining Clinic

His initial work with any pair comprises forward motion, direction, frame and body position. Each horse is expected to move with free, forward movement before guidance and direction is introduced. Here the horse is left alone so long as he is following the line he is set on. As soon as he deviates he is

deliberately corrected then set free again and the process repeated. The greenest of individuals pick up the idea very quickly.

Once horses are guiding well on a variety of different size circles, frame and body position are added to the equation. The horse is asked to stay soft as the slack is gradually lifted out of the reins and his frame shortened in collection. With any resistance the rider is asked to maintain a contact and insist on forward movement keeping the horse straight until he yields to the pressure and is rewarded with immediate release.

Ilan Rosenberg Clinic

Body positioning is introduced as a tool to gain control of the each part of the horse. Ilan explains that two tracking, flexing, and moving the rib cage, shoulder and hip is less about keeping a horse flexible and more about teaching him to give. As he remarks, horses have no problem bending to bite a fly off their back or eat from the floor but they do build up resistance to a rider's hard hands and confusing signals. Ilan works on producing soft, yielding hands for a soft, yielding horse.

Ilan Rosenberg Reining Clinic

Using these fundamental principals, sessions progressed to turnarounds, roll backs, stops and lead changes with horses never asked to perform outside of their physical ability or level of fitness. Any problems are rectified by returning to the basics of forward motion, direction, frame and body position.

Every horse improved as students increased or reaffirmed their technical savvy and understanding of Ilan's methods. Combinations seemed to grow in confidence with horses working happily, reassured by a clear set of rules that allowed no ambiguity in what was expected.

Western Riding Clinic

Sue Woods, owner of Cherokee (a notoriously difficult Appaloosa gelding) has attended three of Ilan's UK clinics. She sums up her experiences:

"Last summer I had the opportunity to ride on one of Ilan's clinics, it was the best decision from a training point of view I have ever made. I had been struggling with the differing ideas I was coming across in the reining world and, as an animal behaviourist, a lot of what was being said to me did not make sense. Ilan has restored my faith in the ability to train a reining horse in a humane manner that makes sense from the horse's point of view. The help he has given me on a horse that had huge problems has been immense, he has a real understanding of how a horse thinks and works.

"He has a real talent in explaining what you need to do as a rider to be effective with each horse as a individual. As a trainer every horse is different and I find it as interesting to listen to him explain how another rider's horse needs riding as much as my own. I have attended all of his clinics in this country and cannot thank him enough for the help he has given me with a horse that the majority of trainers would never have bothered with. However many pushbutton horses there are at these clinics I'm never made to feel that one of my horses is any less important. The Mendip Stud has given us a huge opportunity to train with a really talented horseman".

Certainly I feel that by investing in Ilan's simple and effective philosophy I have not only become a better rider but a better horsewoman. Thank you Ilan.

Letter from the Chairman
David Teideman
Chairman AQHA UK

I have been invited by John Calder to write a column for the Mendip Newsletter on behalf of AQHA UK.

I have been chairman of AQHA UK for the past year and I am the first to admit at times the task has been very daunting, but also very rewarding in seeing what we have achieved over the past year.

At present we seem to have a good blend of people on council, with the established members who have a great deal of knowledge, and the new who have a lot of fresh ideas for the future running of the association.

In the past year I believe we have achieved a great deal. We have a new and exciting Web Site, which the association is very proud of. We also have a new membership, and passport registration data base that eventuality will be linked to Defra & Ned which hopefully will bring us into the 21st century.

On a more personal note I have a vision for the future of western actives here in the UK, that is for ALL western societies and organisations to come together and attempt to form a umbrella to encompass all western societies. I do NOT see a need for the disagreements that appear to be going on at present between the organisations. I am sure we can all work and strive together and build for the future of Western Riding here in the UK. We can of course all keep our separate identities, but would it not be nice some day to have a big western show encompassing all Western societies, therefore maybe attracting the big sponsors, and who knows where that could lead to.

As stated its MY VISION, but one that is achievable, if we are prepared to pull and work together. Lets hope in the very near future we can make this possible to promote the AMERICAN QUARTER HORSE.

Gill Parker Sculpture
Weekend

The weather was foul but the sprits were not dampened as those attending the sculpture weekend spent two full days working with Gill on the subject of the horse…………they all did incredibly well. Aided by an amazing model - Jade - Gill's wonderful Quarter Horse mare. (Jade is a star in her own right who is believed to the only home bred horse to win a performance superior ( Jade has four ! ) and having gained some 394 AQHA points.) Jade joined everyone in the makeshift studio and posed elegantly encouraged from time to time with offerings from the hotcross bun plate. Gill started by showing the group how to make armatures and discussed proportions, physical structure and the importance of

understanding how movement changes perspective angle and proportion. She then let them get on with it ……….and they did…..It was great to see how from a cakeboard, a couple of feet of wire and a

block of plasticine that all of them contrived, with a little help from Gill but no more, to sculpt some fantastic pieces…..click for picture galleries from the 10th and 11th.

Try Before You Buy: Tales From The Show Ground
by Penny Brommersma

Deals are rare in the horsey world, very rare, but every so often you can find gold. Call it a hunch or female intuition but this is exactly what Vivienne believed she had found - a horse walker for under two grand. Checking the address Mrs Hamilton-Carol set off looking, and feeling, a little like Miss Marple chasing a fresh lead.

Arriving at the racing yard with its immaculately kept grounds Vivienne drove down the drive past a beautiful Claydon Horsewalker and up to the house. The trainer met her at the front door and took a rather disappointing turn towards the back of the yard.

After a brief walk the trainer stopped and pointed into the wilderness and there it was. Standing proud amongst weeds and barren

patches of soil, looking a lot like it had spent its early days in an eighteenth century Russian carnival, was the Hot Rodder - built when men were men and Health and Safety regulations were just a twinkle in some bureaucrat's eye. Lever operated, it has three speeds all of which have been illegal since 1976. Vivienne's heart sank. Out of politeness she agreed to have a closer look.

The trainer had been swearing and beating things in the engine room with a hammer for nearly ten minutes. Convinced it was going to take an intense electrical storm to get this one of Frankenstein's monsters up and running again, Vivienne decided to check out the exercise cubicle. Turns out she was wrong. "There you go Mrs Hamilton-Carol, she's running!"

She certainly was. Vivienne tried shouting to explain her predicament to the trainer but was cut short by a wall of rust and flaky paint accelerating towards her. The Hot Rodder is a demanding, unforgiving taskmaster. The trainer arrived just in time to see Vivienne kick

off her shoes, hoist up her skirt and take to her heels.

"Are you alright Mrs Hamilton-Carol?"

The Hot Rodder is as difficult to stop as it is to start. The trainer watched in vain as every couple of seconds a grey blur flashed above the barriers. Its difficult to say how long Vivienne was trapped but the trainer and herself were on first name terms long before she got out.

"Breathe Vivienne and remember keep your knees up! Run on your toes!"

The Hot Rodder is not known for taking prisoners and neither, as it turns out, is Vivienne. In what can only be described as a remarkable victory of man over machine Vivienne out ran the Hot Rodder. Tired, sore and a little dishevelled Vivienne emerged from a fog of smoke and diesel fumes to the marked respect of the trainer and many of the older horses in the yard.

Nicko RobertsonThe Stables Equine Practice was established in 1997 by Nicko Robertson.  Graduating from The Royal Veterinary College in 1988, Nicko worked in the Hertfordshire/ Essex area. This time was punctuated with time spent in an Equine clinic in New Jersey and a spell as a locum in Australia. Despite the appealing prospect of a partnership in a four vet equine practice in Hertfordshire Nicko was drawn back to the West Country with wife Sam and baby Maddy. With a philosophy of offering a client friendly, experienced, well equipped service, Nicko "set up his plate" and waited form the phone to ring. The lack of other equine vets in the area, and the increasing horse population fuelled the exceptional growth and soon additional vets joined the practice.

With three Pony club daughters, time is always at a premium, but Nicko still manages to occasionally indulge his passion for aerobatic flying and competing in triathlons.

The Practice too remains a passion and as the practice has grown, despite the inevitable changes, the original philosophy of providing a personal and up to date service remains a guiding principal.

Tim RandleTim Randle qualified from Bristol Veterinary School in 1994 and worked in the Cotswolds before returning to work at the University in 1998 in order to set up its equine practice. During Tim's time at Langford as Director of the Equine Practice he continued to compete in horse trials and collected an Armada Dish in 2002 for having completed Badminton 5 times. In 2003 he returned to private practice joining forces with Nicko in the continued expansion of "The Stables". Latterly Tim spends less time in the saddle but maintains an interest in the world of three day eventing providing veterinary support to the British Pony Teams and attending various events as an FEI Delegate. Tim and wife Kate recently moved to a new home in Burcott near Wells soon after the birth of their son Alfie.

Julian Wain began his veterinary training at Liverpool University in 1997. After specialising in equine orthopaedics at University, he graduated with commendation and shortly afterwards commenced an internship at O'Gorman, Slater and Main Veterinary Practice, serving the racehorse industry at Lambourn. He stayed as an assistant for another year after his internship and in 2004 joined "The Stables".

Julian WainJulian loves all sports especially rugby, football, squash and anything dangerous. He also loves to travel whenever and wherever possible. He currently lives in Shepton Mallet with his girlfriend Davina, his Labrador dogs and three guinea pigs.

The Stables continues to expand its Team and looks forward to the return in May of new recruit Andy Richardson fresh from a winter's work in the racing stables and equine hospital in Dubai. Indeed The Practice also looks forward to soon announcing a further appointment bringing the head count to five for the busy Summer season!

We are delighted to have the opportunity of working closely with The Mendip Stud further indulging Nicko and Tim's passion for Stud work by allowing the practice to continue to develop the services available in Equine Reproduction. These include all aspects of breeding horses, both traditional and modern, from natural covering to embryo transfer.

During 2007 we welcome new clients and will continue to provide a comprehensive range of equine veterinary services across Somerset and beyond. We pride ourselves on the provision of high quality veterinary care delivered with the application of state-of-the-art diagnostic and therapeutic equipment.

With the breeding season now upon us it is with extra relish that we anticipate forthcoming activities at The Mendip Stud and to working closely with John and Lou for a "bumper year"!

Dressage Competition Another Success

The dressage competition held at the Mendip Stud on January 27th was another success with the weather staying dry and competitors enjoying themselves. The parking was a little bit touch and go and a big thank you to John (Calder) for organising it so efficiently. I think there was all of about 3 inches of parking space left at the end of the day.
You can see the show results here

The next show is planned for February 24th and we are praying for a dry parking area by that day so please all keep your fingers crossed!

The training sessions have also been well attended and the next planned dates are:

Sunday 18th February - Group Training -
To cover all aspects of flat work and general way of going. £10.

Saturday 10th March - Dressage Training. Test riding and movements. Improving confidence and marks. Will practice tests that we are doing at open show on 25th March. Commencing first group at 10am. £15 each

Saturday 24th March - Open Dressage and Show Jumping Competition at Badgworth Arena, incorporating finals of The Mendip Stud and Wessex Riding Club Winter series

Saturday 31st March - Group Training.
Special Value once a month dressage training. £10 per hour.

Saturday 2nd June - Dressage training. Concentrating on test riding if appropriate but happy to cover any problems/improvements necessary. Can cater for all standards/first timers or more advanced as necessary.

Friday 29th - Sunday 1st July - Intensive Training weekend. This will be at the Mendip Stud and stabling will be available for the weekend + camping space if required. The idea is to come along with your horse and really get to the roots of any problems, or just consolidate on training. The weekend will be planned to include at least 2 sessions a day on your own horse, some lunging and ground work training, the opportunity to ride other horses. Also there will be a Western riding demo and a chance to 'have a go' at Western as well as a social evening on the Saturday night. We will have some poles and jumps available so that the weekend can include jump training if required. Just a really good excuse to get away and enjoy your horse!

This will be open to all but WRC and The Mendip Stud members will receive a 10% discount on booking. Prices and full itinerary to be confirmed shortly.

Saturday 7th July - BHS Stage One course commences and will run every fortnight for 10 weeks. The course will include 1 ½ hour's stable management and 1 hours riding and you can either bring your own horse or ride one of ours. This will lead up to an examination if required or if not is just a very practical course for any horse owner and will cover many subjects. The riding will be split if numbers require so that maximum 5 riding at one time. You need to ride in a group in the exam so this is good practice. £30 per session or £275 if book for the whole course.

Tuesday 17th July - Group Training - £10 per session. Maximum 4 in a group. Dressage/grid work training as required. First group to commence 5pm, 6pm & 7pm.

Tuesday 14th August - Group Training - £10 per session. As above

Rocking Horses

A local company is looking for a name for a very special Rocking horse

Rocking horses have been sought after by children for generations and 'Sprout' which is a Somerset based firm, is now looking for a name for a beautifully crafted, hand made horse which is to be raffled to raise money for two charities.

We are offering readers the chance to send in their suggestions, and why they think the name is appropriate and the person whose name is chosen will win 4 raffle tickets for the draw, £100 in retail vouchers and 10% off any Sprout Furniture or Rocking Horses that they order in the future.

The Rocking horse is valued at £2150 and the draw will take place on December 1st 2007. All ticket holders will be invited to a Gala evening where the draw will take place, and the winner will receive delivery in time for Christmas.

The two chosen charities are the Children's Hospice South West and Penny Brohn Cancer Care.

The Children's Hospice South West is dedicated to making the most of short and precious lives of sick, local children and in May 2004 Babe's Big Appeal was launched to raise £15 million to build, equip and endow with initial running costs, a new children's hospice at Charlton Farm at Wraxall close to Bristol. This fabulous new hospice offers sick children and their families respite and relaxation, friendship and a sense of community, a sharing in the 24 hour care of their very sick child, alongside support for the whole family into bereavement.

Sprout Rocking Horses

Penny Brohn Cancer Care (formerly Bristol Cancer Help Centre) provides complementary care, The Bristol Approach, to people living with cancer, and their loved ones. Working alongside medical treatment, this complementary approach can transform lives - giving people practical tools to improve their daily quality of life and helping to take the fear out of cancer.

The Rocking Horse will be appearing at various charity exhibitions around the country throughout the year as well as at some of the major horse shows and raffle tickets (£2.50 each) will go on sale in May, after the horse has been named!

The Children's Hospice South West and Penny Brohn Cancer Care Charity Rocking Horse Raffle Draw sponsored by Sprout will take place on December 1st at a Gala evening to which all ticket holders will be invited.

If you would like a chance to name the horse, please send in your suggestions on a post card to Sprout 'Name the Rocking Horse' Competition and send to Sprout Rocking Horses, Goddard House, Ham Green, Somerset, BS20 0BY.
