A Reflection on the European Championships in Kreuth

Doug and Francesca lead the way …………

Doug Allen and Francesca Sternberg led the way winning the blue ribbon events in reining. These two highly successful British reiners once again delivered the goods and the golds against top class European competition. Yelena My Way - Milo - proved his ability to compete at this level once again and brought them both home to 'gold'. This is believed to be the first time one horse has won both the Amateur and the Senior reining at the European Championships.

Francesca SternbergStarting with WEG last year Doug and Francesca have had a vintage twelve months. Francesca leading the way both individually and in the team event at the World Equestrian Games and also passing the $100,000 in earnings mark in earnings. In breaking this barrier Francesca became only the third European and the first woman in Europe ever to reach six figure earnings joining a very elite and illustrious band of non-pros on the world stage who have passed that milestone. Doug too has had a bumper year, from competing at WEG to winning the CRI at the Garden of England show and capped off by winning the Gold and picking up another European title in the Senior reining last week in Kreuth.

Their leadership and generous sharing of experience and advice was a huge help to all the competitors at Kreuth last week.

Tammy goes out on a high……..

Tammy GreavesTammy Greaves competing in her last European Championships as a youth maintained her winning ways to become a double European Champion. This brings her total of European titles over the last few years to six.

Tammy has been a great ambassador for British youth since her first outing some five years ago. During that time she has won just about all the major youth circuit awards, youth national championships and hundreds of classes in the UK - she has represented Great Britain very successfully at the last three World Youth Games, once in Australia and twice in America, winning gold only last year in Amarillo in the Huntseat. Tammy earlier this year became the only British youth rider ever to win a Lawson bronze in senior Non Pro competition in Europe. To cap things off, only last week she achieved the honour of being selected for and competing for the senior G.B. Team. Many congratulations Tammy and thanks on a youth career that has set very high standards both in the arena and possibly even higher ones outside the arena as an ambassador for the sport and for our Country.

Much too needs to be said of Jessica Sternberg and Josh Collins who let the youth of Europe know that there are very talented and competitive riders from Britain stepping into Tammy's shoes. In the finals they both made it to the podium -winning three silver medals between them. Jessica had a 'blinder' of a week leading up to the finals, winning qualifying shows in reining, huntseat and showmanship and then taking two silvers behind Tammy. Josh went out and wow'd them with his reining taking second place - a half point only separating gold from silver !

My own Zip Chip Leaguer ('Studley') did his bit and chipped in keeping the British flag flying taking the bronze in the Senior Western Pleasure.

But it is not only about winning medals - it's about competing and having the courage and nerve to do so. Jessica March, Caroline Coles, Luke Phillamore, Lily Fry all were winners in the battles they fought and won against their nerves, confidence and expectations, let alone the competition - all achieved, all rode well and competed to the best of their ability on the highest stage that the sport in Europe has to offer. Anyone who saw the efforts and achievements of all these riders could be left in no doubt that Great Britain has a wealth of talent in our youth ranks and no stone must be left unturned by the UK's Western community to support and secure for them every opportunity to grow in experience and ability and to show at international level when and where possible. The spirit and determination of this group of young people could not have been better exemplified than by Becky Dickson who despite being unable to compete as her horse was off for a couple of weeks put her personal disappointment behind her and supported in every way she could shouting and cheering as loud as anybody.

It wasn't only the youth who were well represented - there were a host of other British competitors and their supporters giving their best and competing in a variety of disciplines and it has to be said that if there were medals for support and commitment both in the arena and in the stands there is no doubt the UK contingent would have been right at the top. The stables were the focal point with refreshments always readily available and other liquid celebrations on hand to when needed. Thanks to all those who made this such a safe haven and our own 'Little Britain'. There was a great atmosphere and togetherness - everyone supported and encouraged each other making Kreuth seem a little smaller than the size it really is - you were pleased to be there and very proud to be British.

AMERICANA 2008

Americana 2008

From the Americana press office

Preparations started for European top event in western riding / More than 40.000 visitors expected in Augsburg / Infos www.americana.de

Although it is still about one year until the beginning of 2008 Americana, preparation for the event that is supposed to attract more than 40 000 visitors are already underway. "Indeed, preparations for the next show already started right after the end of 2006 Americana," says ‚Mister Americana' Horst Geier, and he promises: " In AMERICANA's 22nd year, we will offer top sport with super stars as well as plenty of entertainment, fun and information." The show which is scheduled for September 3 to 7, 2008, should attract about 350 competitors from all over the world.

Exhibitors: AMERICANA top in turnover compared to other horse fairs. When 2006 AMERICANA closed its doors, the 240 competitors from all over Europe could look back on successful days at Europe's most important western trade fair. While many other show organizers have to fight against reduced numbers of visitors and less turnover for exhibitors, AMERICANA did well again in 2006.

Especially new exhibitors were impressed by

the huge numbers of visitors. Quite some renowned companies even thought of bigger booths for next AMERICANA. Generally, the level of quality increased. Many exhibitors said they got more new customers than in former years. And a lot of the exhibitors said "AMERICANA would be the last fair we could miss!"

A representative survey of the exhibitors showed the positive feelings and the better results compared to 2004. More than half of the companies questioned (54 per cent compared to 39 % in 2004) said their business success was ‚very good' or ‚good'. 36 per cent were 'content' with what they achieved. 16 per cent (in 2004: 11 per cent) said that they had sold more than during the previous AMERICANA. 71 per cent said that they would come to the next AMERICANA again, 29 per cent could not give a definite statement.

So, AMERICANA is the perfect place for exhibitors to present their products and advertise. Exhibitor information is already available at www.americana.de under 'exhibitors'. The brochure for exhibitors with the forms was mailed in September already.

Winfried Forster of Organizer AFAG Messen und Ausstellungen GmbH promises: "In 2008, we will once more present Europe's top fair for western riders and western horse lovers as well as superb evening shows and plenty of entertainment!"

AMERICANA - that is western riding in all its fascinating aspects with a special focus on several disciplines. There will be one of the  most attractive reinings there as well as

spectacular cutting and the Reined Cow Horse Futurity.

In 2006, AMERICANA offered a purse of more than EUR 146,000.--. "And 2008 AMERICANA will offer an enormous amount as well," says Horst Geier. "Just thing of the NRHA shows offering EUR 60 000,-- added in 2008."By the way: for competitors, Americana 2008 already starts on August 31, 2008, as the go rounds will take place before the official opening on September 3. When 2008 AMERICANA is officially open to visitors, top class competition will be during the day with the best horses and riders, The three evening shows present sports highlights mixed with show and entertainment. For these, buying tickets in advance is really recommended. Online ticket sale starts at the beginning of November upon (www.americana.de). For more information please call 49 (0)821-58982 301 then.

Lesson Horse of the Month

An interview with Splash from The Mendip stud
Name: Splash
Age: 13yrs
Colour: overo paint
Size: 14.2hh

Why did you choose to live at TMS?
I was living in Germany and had heard that TMS were looking for more lesson horses. I thought it was the perfect job me, so I got on the boat and made it here by mid October 2006.

How did you get the job of lesson horse?
As soon as my passage was booked it was my intent to get the job, I just had to prove myself... I made sure of it by giving Lou the

best ride at the Ilan clinic ever...

What disciplines do you specialize in Splash?
I like to say that I am a solid all around horse. I like to show all of my riders that I can turn my hoof to anything from showmanship, trail to reining... I spent a lot of my time in Germany hacking about although I spent a month or so doing some pretty intensive moves with Ilan Rosenberg

Have you had any show achievements?
I have taken one of my riders Ellie to a couple of shows this year it was a first for the both of us... I loved every minute of it we got a 2nd in the horsemanship. I also did a freestyle reining class with another of my riders Annalisa and that was the highlight of my summer it was sooooo exciting.

What is your favourite food Splash?
I am not a great eater, but since being in the UK I have really improved my appetite with
Mendip Mix which is specially made and designed for us by some of the countries top nutritionists based on the foundation recipe developed and created by Lou at the Mendip stud.

Do you have a favourite client?
I love all our clients but my I really really enjoy helping with the youth days that Lisa holds during the holidays. The children are good fun… check out the pic.

BOB MAYHEW - RETIRES FROM COMPETING

Bob Mayhew is perhaps one of the best know western riders and trainers in the UK. For many years Bob has been at the forefront of all things Western and it is with a tinge of sadness that we report on his retirement from the competitive side of the sport.

Bob made his announcement to retire from competing at the recent Western Equestrian Society Championship show Held at Moreton Morrel earlier this year. Bob has been showing since 1983 and has competed very successfully both here in the UK and also in Europe. Bob has had the honour of representing his country since 1989. Bob rode for the British team at the NRHA Derby in St Paul, Minnesota, USA, and later in his career took his own horse, Fast Draw Peppy, to the World Equestrian Games. In more recent years he was the highest GB reining team member at the NRHA affiliate championships in Italy, and was for several years, British Reining open high point end of year winner.

Immediately after announcing his competitive retirement Bob said:

" I've had 24 years of super fun showing, but having passed 60 some years ago, the bones need some rest and it's time for the youngsters to get cracking! I'd like to think that I've been a good ambassador for the sport, and have inspired many people to come into it. I have no intention of fading away, and will continue to teach and help others to get to higher standards. My philosophy in teaching is to try to make people better than me! ….. "

Bob's show career started in earnest at the breed show in 1983, and by the following year he won his first AQHA points in reining, followed by points in trail and pleasure in 1985. By 1986 he was showing at Americana in Munich, Germany, gaining a 5th in the European Championship trail and a 4th in the AQHA reining. His faithful mount for the reining, home trained Tewy, became (according to records) the first British bred and trained Quarter Horse to cross the channel and compete in Europe.

By 1988, Bob and Tewy made the finals of the Bronze Trophy reining at Americana and again set a record for the only European bred, trained and ridden horse in the finals. Numerous horses followed through Bob's hands and onto subsequent successes in the show ring. In 1992 Bob qualified two horses, Avenues CP Lynxette and Doc a Sock, for the finals of the European championships at Western Riding.

Bob and his wife, Chrissie, made up the first AQHA Champion shown exclusively in British shows, namely AQHA Champion Sensational Keeper. During his show career Bob has trained numerous horses, in addition to those already mentioned, who have gone on to great successes in the show pen, Dun it at Dawn, Enterprising O'lena, Mega Pine (Denmark), Ruling Party, Corina Lena CT, Never Snap Alone, and just recently Peppynics Jay, just about to start his career in the US.

Finishing his competitive career at the WES show Bob summed up the weekend saying

'….. The WES show was such a lovely show and whilst it was in mind to retire from showing at the end of the year, I felt it would be better to finish on a high, especially as, alongside my great chum, Roger Wells, we spent many hours laying the foundation of

WES, the society therefore holds a special place in my heart. Not only did Chrissie, Michael, and I have a successful show, but also to see our client's do so well was the greatest buzz of the weekend. It would be difficult to better that show so it was a great place to go. I would like to use this opportunity to say a special thanks to all the show managers and helpers who, over the years, have worked tirelessly and often without reward, who have make it possible for me and others to have a show career here in the UK. I hope to still see you all at the clinics or here at Wye Oak. God Bless.'

Thanks Bob for all you have done for the sport in your competitive career. On a personal note you and Chrissie have been a constant source of help encouragement and advice to Lou and I over the last few years. A whilst this is no goodbye and only a closure on one part of your involvement in the sport we wish you well and look forward to seeing you here teaching and instructing passing on your wealth of experience. ED J

_______________________________

Bob will be holding clinics at the Mendip Stud in the next few months - one on the 21st of October, and he will also be hosting a Judging seminar on Sunday December the 9th which is a must for all competitors irrespective of which western society or association you are a member. Bob judging seminars are regard as about as good as they get and we would encourage all those involved in the competitive side of the sport to attend.

About 'The Club'

Over the course of the last year or so we have hosted nearly 100 clinic days, the vast majority of which have been filled within a few hours of them being posted on the website or publicised. This, we believe, is down to a few main factors - good clinicians, good facilities, good hospitality and loyal and regular customers and above all demand in the area.

Through this period a fantastic atmosphere has developed amongst all who come here from the first time rider to the experienced show competitor together with an ever-growing list of supporters and spectators and has been enhanced more recently with the arrival of Celia Gadd and the traditional equestrian following that she has brought with her.

The Club has been established for nearly a year. The intention is for members to use the stud and its facilities on a regular basis, maximising our facilities, meeting some of the needs, wants and aspirations that people have with their equestrian hobby. Whilst at the same time offering benefits in the pocket and the chance to book early for clinics etc and other incentives.

'The Club' will be run like health clubs, squash clubs - staffed and run entirely by Mendip Stud employees- excepting on show days etc, when club volunteers will be needed. Rules will be few and far between but based on common sense and mutual respect. There will be no committees but advice as usual will be sought, listened to and acted upon.

Traditional News and Events

Celia has certainly been busy this summer as not only has she had her lovely little baby girl Roxie, (now five months old going on 15!) but she has also launched her new magazine title along with her sister Liz Snell.

Equine Canine and Country Life is currently at production stage of the November issue and has already increased in pagination and circulation due to popular demand..

The Mendip Stud are sponsoring the Western Riding section of the magazine which is to be developed over coming months and there is lots of scope for articles on all local riders and dog owners so please get in touch with Celia if you have any news!

Celia has already also been back in the saddle and was placed 2nd and 3rd at her

first two competitive outings at the affiliated dressage at Badgworth arena riding Dot Godfrey's Highly Sprung. The pair has great hopes for this little horse for the future and they are currently in regular training with Isobel Wessels and Rhegan White.

Not happy with just riding and producing the magazine Celia is also organising the Sprout X Factor Dressage to Music Championship competition at The Hand Equestrian Centre on November 16th and a Christmas Country Fair on December 15th and 16th where there will be a variety of demonstrations and shopping opportunities.

She is now available for private and group lessons at the stud and has a very busy 2008 planned, (watch this space for our Equine and Canine Country Fair in July!!!)

For any further information on the above please ring Celia on 01934 751171 or 07779 716826 or email celia@equinecanineandcountrylife.co.uk
