Started in 2003 by Managing Director John Calder and his partner Louise Talintyre, The Mendip Stud has grown to become one of the leading and most respected facilities for Western Riding in the UK. Set in over a hundred acres of beautiful Somerset countryside The Mendip Stud is also one of the West Country's top equestrian centres and has become one of the UK’s leading venues in the specialist sport of Western Riding.
The Mendip Stud is not just a
training yard breeding quality American Quarter Horses and Appaloosas but a
lot, lot more. It's a complete package aimed at bringing you everything you need in a relaxed and friendly setting. The Stud is now one of the finest breeding and AI facilities in the U.K. specialising in American Quarter Horses and Appaloosas and is very proud to have state of the art equipment and facilities. Standing this year at the stud are our own stallions:
We will also stand a limited number of customer's stallions. The stud specialises in western riding but also caters for other aspects and disciplines of equitation. Horses and riders alike can enjoy lessons and training with international trainers and top amateur clinicians most Saturdays of the year. In 2006 this will include:

The breeding side of the business covers all aspects of pre-natal, natal and post-natal care. Mares are watched, assessed daily in their final trimester and stabled with 24-hour supervision if required. All foaling boxes are large and spacious with independent lighting and C.C.T.V. A twenty-four hour watch and care programme managed by experienced staff is in place during the foaling season. Customers wishing to use our services for foaling-out should contact Lou Talintyre at least three months prior to due date. See the ‘Breeding’ pages on the website for more detail.
We have Quarter Horse and Appaloosa stock for sale of yearlings, young stock, brood mares and finished horses. The Mendip Stud is a dedicated equestrian facility specializing in Western Riding, based at the foot of the beautiful Mendip Hills. With 100 acres of grazing land, river frontage and magnificent views, the Stud is a breeding centre for Quarter Horses and Appaloosas. We have an extensive breeding programme, horse and rider training programmes, together with residential courses for all aspects of Western Riding. The Mendip Stud is situated in the grounds of Bow Farm, an impressive 18th Century farmhouse set in 100 acres of farmland on the Somerset levels. The grounds feature a stunning lake planted with trees, shrubs, perennials and marginal plants, together with an abundance of natural wildlife. The house also has a magnificent view of the Mendip Hills, particularly towards Crook Peak and looking back to Cheddar Gorge. Non-riders will have plenty to do with fishing, shooting and walking available and the many nearby tourist attractions such as Cheddar Gorge and Wookey Hole. The M5 motorway is just 10 minutes away and Bristol Airport just 20 minutes drive. Shopping is available in the nearby Weston-super-Mare, and we are within 30 minutes of both Taunton and The Mall at Bristol.
